The indicator was calculated by applying a GIS-based accessibility model. Input GIS datasets are the European-wide trunk road network, a GIS layer on city locations in Europe, and a 2.5x2.5 km reference grid for Europa. For each grid cell, the car travel times to all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants are calculated. If the travel time was shorter than 60 min, the city was counted as valid destination within reach. Raster results were then aggregated to NUTS-3 regions as population-weighted averages.
The indicator is available for entire Europe, including non-ESPON space, for 2011 and 2014 at grid level, and as aggregates at NUTS-3 level.
So far the indicator is available for 2011 and 2014. Continuous future updates in 5-year intervals are, however, recommended.
Data available at grid level and at NUTS-3 level for entire Europe. Based upon grid results, aggregates to other territorial units such as LAU-2, NUTS-2, NUTS-1 or others are possible.
