Indicator derived by means of GIS techniques. Input data are LAU-2 population figures, as well as a 2.5x2.5 km grid system for the whole of Europe. For each grid cell, the population in all LAU-2 centers located within 50 km are summed up. Finally the indicator is averaged to NUTS-3 regions and standardized at European average.
In ESPON TeMo this indicator was presented for 2008 for ESPON space, with data for Belarus and Russia missing. A new calculation was done for entire Europe, i.e. including Belarus and Russia, for 2001 and 2011, at raster level, which was then aggregated to NUTS-3 level. Data for 2008 is, however, not directly comparable with 2001 and 2011, since indicator for 2008 was standardized at EU27 average, while 2001 and 2011 figures were standardized at European average.
So far data are available for 2001, 2008 and 2011. Since spatial urban structure only change slowly over time, indicator updates in 5-year intervals seem reasonable.
